The problem here is that the volume controls and sound mixer changed radically between XP and Vista/7.  You can still make it work, but there are a couple of extra steps.

First you must be using real Vista/7 drivers - if you are not then you will not be able to find the 'Stereo Mixer' recording device.  This is what you need to set the recording device for the stream as.

Second you have to set the machine to 'listen' to your microphone.  To do this, right click on the volume icon and choose 'Recording Devices'.  Select your microphone and click Properties.  Now click on the Listen tab and check listen to this device.  Click OK and then OK again to close.

Now when you left click on the volume icon and choose mixer, you will see the microphone listed with its own mute/volume control.  Now it behaves just like XP.
